Steven Douglas Co., Inc, has been creating figurative jewelry that is truly "wearable art" for twenty years. They design a large variety of figure jewelry such as mermaids, angels, dolphins, seahorses, frogs, shells, flowers, cats, penguins and so much more! These delicate yet durably beautiful designs are available in 14kt gold and sterling silver & 14kt gold and are accented with semi-precious and precious gemstones such as tsavorite, pink sapphire, diamond, and opal. At Diamonds 'n Dunes, we are very happy to bring these exquisitely rendered jewelry figures to our customers who come to Kitty Hawk from near and far.
The design process for this particular line of jewelry is a time consuming endeavor that requires perfection from a team of artisans and craftsmen. Starting with the original design all the way through to the production of the finished piece, Steven Douglas jewelry is made with the highest standards of production found today. This creation process consists of three steps: the original design, making an original model, and the execution of a finished piece.
Motivation for the original design is usually inspired by nature and imagination. First, the designer visualizes the piece. If his/her vision is strong enough, then the model can be started but usually right away. This requires sketching to flesh out the concept. Sometimes this process takes hardly any time at all, but other times many hours are spent working the idea from concept to a valid design.
The second step of making the original physical model is, perhaps, the most time consuming part of the process. Without a perfect model, you would never have a perfect piece of finished jewelry. This perfection comes with the investment of eighty hours (or more) per model to create. The sculptor will spend at least forty of those hours making sure the details of the design are meticulous. It is this kind of attention to detail that is vital to obtain the desired results. Without it, the design would just be ordinary. After the model is finished, the original model is then cast and painstakingly finished.
Reproducing the original design is the last step and requires focused and patient craftsmen. Up to eight different individuals with specialized talents can be involved and the only result throughout this process that is accepted is perfection. Only the highest quality materials are used. As you can tell, it takes many hours to produce a single piece achieving the necessary quality to be released as an original Steven Douglas design.
